Listen and read the text. Answer the questions.
Solution
- Albert is too young to join the army, as mentioned in the text. While he tries to convince Captain Nicholls that he is old enough, the officer insists that Albert is too young, and suggests he come back in a year or so. Therefore, Albert is likely younger than seventeen.
- Captain Nicholls appears to be kind. The following sentences underline his kindness: "He had black, curly hair, and a kind open look on his face."; "The officer shook his head and replaced his cap. 'I’m sorry, young man, regulations.'"
- At the end of the text, Albert feels saddened but determined. He tries to reassure Joey, stating, "I’ll find you again, you old silly," which indicates his resolve to reunite with his beloved horse. However, he also cannot hide his disappointment and sadness, as indicated by his inability to smile despite his efforts.
