- Bryson has difficulty understanding the train destinations because the platform televisions weren't working, and he couldn't understand the announcements.
- Bryson repeatedly asks, "Excuse me, is this the Barnstaple train?"
- "The large linear object" refers to the train itself. Bryson humorously describes it as such to emphasize the formality and redundancy of asking whether it's the Barnstaple train when it's visually apparent.
